From the “you can’t make this stuff up” department: The U.S. EPA has fined the U.S. Air Force $12,823 for violations of RCRA Underground Storage Tank regulations!
The EPA has proven to be an agency much more interested in fining violators than helping folks comply with the environmental laws, but this really takes the cake! Who will pay that $12,823? American taxpayers.
The U.S. Air Force exists to keep us safe, and defense is a core function of government that nearly everyone agrees needs to be adequately funded. The same cannot be said for the EPA. Let’s hope Congress remembers this ridiculous behavior when they are looking for places to cut budgets on January 1. Perhaps they can use the $9 billion currently allocated to the EPA to help fund defense programs.
